Butter Pancakes

Pancake!

Challenge: In this project, I need to think with creative imagination and design a unique and appealing recipe for the simplest and most basic fast-food pancake recipe, using any format. To make the project more interesting, I planned to make the recipe consists of four forms: animation, foldable recipe, static poster, and dynamic poster.

Solution: Inspired by the retro American style food posters, this project adopts bright and lively colours and uses retro, gorgeous floral fonts, which not only increases appetite but also captures the audience's attention. The vintage feel makes the recipe even more unique in today's popular aesthetics. The four recipe designs, while different in format, share a consistent style.

I first sketched out the storyboard for my animation, so I have an idea about what elements I should design and prepare. I want the whole animation to narrative the instruction very clear. I designed all the ingredients in Illustrator with a clean graphic style. I think this graphic style more comfortable and easy to look at and follow. I also make sure that some parts of one object can be seperated, so it would be easier to animate. Following the storyboard, I imported everything into After Effects, and start animating. It takes long time to adjust the elements and timing.

For the motion posters, I made in Procreate using the animation assist function. It is really time consuming, because to acheive the smooth animation, I have to draw each frame, which took approximately 6 hours. To match with my style for the still posters, I go for the cute cartoon style for one motion poster, for the other one I mimic the dripping of maple syrup with the types melting and dripping. I also made all the motions repeated, so they have a nice consistency and rhyme.

For the poster series, I also tried two different styles. But I both used collage pictures of the ingredients in the posters, to add more information for the instruction. I used pink and yellow for the retro+vintage style, and typeface of Avenir because it’s clean and easy to read. Among the 4 forms, the video style is the most gentle, with illustrations as the main focus, accompanied by music, making it easy for the audience to comprehend. The foldable recipe is the most traditional, with tidy and orderly information layout. On the other hand, the posters are the most playful and adorable, combining illustrations, photos, and text. The addition of looping dynamic designs keeps the audience interested.
